We call ourselves the Cordate Community. “Cordate” means heart-shaped. It has to do with the Spirituality of the Heart which we nurture, a spirituality characterised by an open and welcoming attitude to the people around us, whoever they are. It is a spirituality of concern, commitment and loyalty.
We are not the inventors of this spirituality. We stand in a tradition of over 150 years. It was Jules Chevalier who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) in 1854, in a place called Issoudun in Central France. He was concerned about the people of his day, about the loss of meaning they experienced after the political upheavals of the 18th and 19th centuries.
But we have to go back much farther in time to get at the origin of the Spirituality of the Heart. Ultimately it is Jesus Christ who represents for us the Heart of God in this world. He has shown us who God is and what justice and love means in the concrete. He is our lasting inspiration and the centre of our lives. Read more here.
The Cordate Community is based in the Aston area of Birmingham, UK. We chose a multi-ethnic, multi-faith and deprived neighbourhood on purpose. Aston is where we want to be. Read more about the project here…
