A New MSC Mission for Europe

Carl Tranter MSC (England), Ton Zwart MSC (The Netherlands) and Mark Van Beeumen MSC (Belgium): members of the MSC Cordate Community

The modern environment demands of us an honest openness to dialogue with the different cultures and "areopagi" of today (cf. Acts 17:16-34), to new ways of thinking and relating in the tradition of our way of the Heart.

MSC General Chapter

2005

Welcome to the website of the Cordate Community of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC), an international Catholic Religious Congregation.

This is a European MSC pilot project seeking to develop a Christian ministry of presence, as members of an international religious community, in the heart of the English city of Birmingham.

The community is based in the Aston area of the city, described in most literature as a multi-ethnic, multi-faith and deprived neighbourhood.  In Birmingham it has a reputation for being a neighbourhood of high unemployment, high crime, and significant problems with drugs, gangs, guns and knives.  But it is also a neighbourhood of great friendliness, a fantastic mix of faiths and cultures, and a place of opportunity for bridge-building, dialogue and befriending.  In the heart of this neighbourhood the Cordate Community brings together MSCs from three of our eight different European Provinces in a common project of all the MSCs in Europe.  Read more about the project here...

Cordate means heart-shaped and expresses our desire to model, incarnate and share the inclusive love and compassion of Christ who loved with a human heart.  Read more here.

We hope you will enjoy browsing the pages of this site to find out more about the mission, and return often to keep up to date with our progress.  This website is updated regularly.  Please feel free to e-mail us with your comments.

Mark takes on a new job at Tesco as "Community Champion"

In October last year Mark was approached by his personnel manager at Tesco and asked if he would be interested in taking over the role of Community Champion.  This entails being the link between the Aston store and local charities, community organisations, religious groups, schools, etc.  Tesco is committed to supporting such groups in their fund-raising and in advertising their activities.  There are regular displays outside the store, highlighting upcoming events, celebrating religious festivals and commemorating such times as black history month.  Local groups regularly use the store as a base for fund-raising initiatives.  After some discernment as a community we collectively agreed that this could be a great opportunity both for Mark and for our ongoing presence here in Aston.  The new role means an increase in Mark's hours (from 12 to 18 hours a week), but also offers more flexibility in terms of when he works.  Mark began the job at the beginning of November and so far is really enjoying it.  At the moment he is working for 6 hours during the daytime on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, which leaves Tuesdays free for our regular attendance at the Senior Citizens' Lunch Club and Thursdays free for our Heart of Welcome drop-in.  It also means his evenings and weekends are now free.  We will update you on how Mark is getting on in our next news bulletin.

Evaluation of the Cordate Community and mission

During this year we are participating in an ongoing evaluation process of our project.  We are now into our third year in Aston and it was agreed from the outset that during the third year there would be a process of review and evaluation by the MSC European Provinces.  A small evaluation team has been put in place by the European MSC Provincials' Conference.  The members of that team are visiting us throughout the course of this year to witness what we are doing in Aston, talk with us about our experiences and meet with some of the people we live and work among.

In January we were delighted to welcome Fr Wahyudi, Assistant Superior General from the MSC congregational leadership team in Rome.

In the middle of April we were all set to welcome Ben Verberne MSC (Provincial of the Dutch Province and Chair of the European Provincials' Conference) and Michael Huber MSC (member of the leadership team of the South German/Austrian Province).  Both MSCs were due to visit us as part of the process of evaluating our third year of presence here in Aston.  Sadly the eruption of the Icelandic volcano and the resulting ash cloud that covered most of Europe for a week or more meant that their flights were cancelled and they could not travel.  They have now rescheduled to come during the last week of August.

Senior Citizens' Lunch Club visit to Special Needs Day Centre in Sutton Coldfield

All of the members of our regular Tuesday Senior Citizens' Lunch Club were delighted to have been invited to go for lunch at a day centre for adults with special needs in nearby Sutton Coldfield.  Five or six of the day centre users have been attending our regular Tuesday lunches for the last six months or so.  They were keen to be able to return the hospitality and welcome us to their centre.  All of the seniors met at our house at 11.00am on Tuesday 17th August and we borrowed the school minibus to take us all over to Sutton where we were treated to a great afternoon of a wonderful lunch, a game of bingo and good chat.

Aston Heritage Day

Saturday 26th June was Aston Heritage Day with a dozen or more local historic buildings open to the public for the day.  Our own Sacred Heart Church was one of the buildings on the Heritage Trail.  During the course of the day we had 146 visitors to the church, many more than in previous years.  Most of the visitors were local residents, many of whom are Muslim, and have never been into the Church before.  It was a great occasion and an opportunity for some very interesting conversations, not only about the beauty of the Church but about Christianity and Christian worship.  One of our visitors was a local Imam who was fascinated by his visit and is keen to have ongoing contact with us.

You can download this year's Aston Heritage Day leaflet here.

Mark and Ton formally commissioned at Street Pastors

Earlier this year Mark and Ton completed their six month training as Street Pastors.

On June 13th there was a commissioning ceremony held at Mount Zion Christian Centre in Aston where the new Street Pastors were formally appointed and prayed for.

Mark and Ton have both been out patrolling the streets of Aston at night over the last few weeks and find the experience very interesting and rewarding.  A rota has been drawn up and they will be out on the streets at least once a month.

Ton's family visit

During the first two weeks of July Ton played host to four members of his family who visited from Holland; his brother Frans, his sister Elly, brother-in-law Paul and sister-in-law Mia.  They stayed in the MSC guest Cottage at Princethorpe and used it as a base to do some sight-seeing around Warwickshire, the Cotswolds and Shropshire.  July 4th was Ton's 68th birthday and all of them came to Aston for the afternoon and evening where we enjoyed a special celebration meal.  Happy birthday, Ton!!

"Heart of Welcome" offers English Conversation Sessions

Reflecting on the experience of our Heart of Welcome Drop-In centre which opened in December, we decided that there was sufficient need among people we know locally to begin a weekly English conversation group.  We have decided to offer the conversation sessions at the beginning of the Thursday Drop-In, for one hour.  Many of the recent migrants we are working with are attending some form of English classes, but have little or no opportunity to practice English from one class to the next.  This will offer such an opportunity in a more relaxed, informal atmosphere and in a situation where we are also providing other support - befriending, help with form-filling, signposting of services, etc.

We held the first conversation group on 13th May.  They have been lively and thoroughly enjoyable occasions.  Most of the participants then stay for lunch afterwards and continue the conversation that has begun during the formal session.
